There’s A Monastery Hidden Near The River In Maine And You’ll Want To Visit

For others, a nice rest day might include time with friends enjoying a meal. We love both of those things, but we also enjoy the cool breeze of a day outside in Maine. And this peaceful spot in Kennebunk is a great place to find it.

Head to Kennebunk, just off of the Kennebunk River, for the opportunity to relax completely.

This beautiful small town has a lot to offer out-in-the-open, but the secret spots are even more special.

The Franciscan Monastery dates back to 1947 and it still operates today as it did back then.

Visitors are invited to spend time here between sunrise and sunset and there are plenty of areas in which to get lost.

The monastery itself has been active since the day it opened, but over time more outdoor chapels were added.

Each one is surrounded by nature and perfect for worship or even just some time alone.

Inside things are even more beautiful. This intricate stained glass was in the main chapel was crafted by Vytautas K. Jonynas, a Lithuanian architect and artist.

To see some of the best spots at the monastery, be sure to grab the Walking Tour of the Shrines, which will not only lead you on a tour, but it will point out the elements you just can't miss.

St. Anthony's Franciscan Monastery is just as peaceful as it sounds and you can visit for Holy Mass Monday through Friday at 7:30 a.m., Wednesday and Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m., and on Sunday at 9:15 a.m. and 11 a.m. You can also extend your quiet time by booking a stay overnight at the Franciscan Guest House, which you can learn more about here.
