History has certainly made its mark here in Maine. From bridges to homes to stories passed along for generations, there are so many interesting things to imagine when you want to think about what Maine was like before we all arrived here. This church is one of the oldest structures in the state and it comes with an interesting back story.
Kittery is one of Maine's most popular tourist towns. Located in the southern part of the state, it's easy to access from other parts of New England and there's plenty to do if you love shopping and beaching. But, it also has some of the most fascinating history in Vacationland.
The locals who formed The Congregational Church in Kittery did so in 1653, but it wasn't until 1730 that the actual building was complete.
The church is the oldest in the state, though elements have been added to account for an expanding congregation that swelled as more people moved to the Kittery area.
The parsonage house still stands today and it was built in 1729. A cemetery was added in 1733.
Those with an interest in architecture might notice that there are a few different design elements integrated into the building. The Greek Revival paneled pilasters at the building corners are especially notable.
Improvements and upgrades have been made along the way, but the heart and community of the church remains the same.
And the inside still includes the original detail. Inside you'll find a traditional layout with two aisles and a pulpit at the front.
The church building is a wonderful way to learn more about Maine's past.
While it's best not to consider it a tourist attraction, the congregation is happy to welcome visitors who would like to attend services.
