The Dorm Haunting Mystery In Maine Still Baffles People Today

In Maine, ghost stories are a dime a dozen. With a history that dates back centuries, it's no wonder that we've got roads, buildings and entire forests haunted by the ghost of some spooky creature or another. Recently, while spending a weekend with some University of Maine grads, we were reminded of one of the spookiest stories to be passed down. If you've spent any time at the University of Maine Farmington's Mallett Hall, you've likely encountered some of what we're telling you about today!

The University of Maine in Farmington was founded in 1864 as the state's first public institution of higher education.

It's been home to class after class of dedicated students from both here in Maine and out-of-state.

It's this long history that makes stories of hauntings in Farmington so compelling.

Many of the buildings hold spooky memories, from Mallett Hall to Dakin to the Nordica Auditorium.

Nordica, located in Merrill Hall, is said to be haunted by the ghost of Lady Nordica who plays the piano, stands near people and generally makes her presence known.

There have been tales of custodians seeing the piano played loudly with no human form nearby, as well as midnight voices from above when no other people were inside.

But, the stories we've heard more than once are those of hauntings in Mallett Hall, a 3-story dorm on campus.

One of the most notable tales is that of a suicide.

Today, those on the third floor can hear what sounds like furniture moving and banging taking place above them. Could the noise simply be other students actually moving things? Perhaps. But it's unlikely given that nothing exists above the third floor...just a flat roof.

One story tells the tale of a girl falling down an elevator shaft on campus.

Today, her ghost is said to roam Mallett, making unexplained noise and causing cold areas in otherwise warm corridors and rooms.

And, there are many other stories from buildings around campus.
