1. The North Waterboro Pole Christmas Light Display, Waterboro
The North Waterboro Pole Christmas Light Display is one of the most festive holiday events in Maine. Each year on the day after Thanksgiving, the town flips a switch and performs a little holiday magic, with over 25,000 lights illuminating this beautiful area! For the rest of the year, 74 Mayfair Way becomes "The Waterboro North Pole" (complete with Frosty the Snowman and The Man in Red himself) - and it's a fun and wonderful holiday tradition in the Pine Tree State that you won't want to miss. Even better? All proceeds from this festive event support Toys for Tots.

2. Gardens Aglow, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, Boothbay Harbor
This is the largest holiday light display in all of Maine, and wow, is it a stunner. Each year come November and December, Gardens Aglow lights up the Boothbay peninsula in a dazzling display of color and holiday cheer. Take a trip through 14 acres of gardens covered in no less than 150,000 lights. Stick around for dinner at the on-site cafe which has a seasonal menu as well as live music. This tradition of experiencing the lights of Gardens Aglow is one you won't want to miss.

3. Old Port Area, Portland
If you prefer to avoid all the pomp and circumstance of a formal lighting, spend some time simply exploring the Old Port area of Portland. Check out
Tommy's Park, Longfellow and Monument Squares, and then pop down to the Old Port and take a look at the lights that spread throughout the streets on a leisurely Christmas lights walk in ME. They're some of our favorites and always end in hot chocolate!
4. Norton Lights, Wells
The tradition of the Norton Lights began 2006, when two brothers created their own Crazy Christmas Contest to see who could install more lights in their yard. After weeks of decorating, the reaction received from friends and family was enough to keep them hooked. The Christmas light show begins the first weekend of December and runs through Christmas night. The operation has grown so much that they've now partnered with Make-A-Wish of Maine. You'll find a donation box at the end of the driveway for those who would like to donate.

5. Gardiner Parade of Lights, Gardiner

6. The L.L. Bean Northern Lights Celebration, Freeport
This epic holiday event is a fan favorite. From an amazing synchronized show with music and visual effects, to fun events happening all around the L.L. Bean campus, there really is something for everyone at this amazing Christmas event in Maine. Our favorite part of this experience is the Night Sky Dome, a geodesic dome featuring a simulation of the Northern Lights -- definitely make a point of checking it out! 7. Monument Square Tree Lighting, Portland
While not an entire light show, the lighting of the Monument Square tree indicates the true start of the season in Portland. Each year, folks come en masse to visit with Santa Claus, enjoy live music and free horse and wagon rides through town, and, of course, a truly wondrous holiday lights display. 8. Wilton Lights, Wilton
One of the very best and most beloved holiday events in the Pine Tree State, Wilton Lights is an animated Christmas and Halloween light display in Wilton, Maine, hosted by the Hilton Family & InterFix Communications. The lights are animated by computer and synchronized with music. The music can be heard by tuning your car radio to 96.9 FM when you are nearby. Preparation for the display begins as soon as the after Christmas sales start the previous year and continues through the summer. The animation sequence programming is done throughout the year. This is truly a family project which requires a lot of careful planning. This is truly one of the most unique holiday events in Maine!
9. Nubble Lighthouse, Cape Neddick
Every year, Nubble Lighthouse dresses in its sparkly finest to put on a nightly display for all of Maine to see. The first lighting and celebration takes place the weekend following Thanksgiving; and, if the weather holds out, it just might be warm enough to spend some time outside gazing up at the beauty. This private home truly does a great job at enthralling the community. Each year the display changes, and we can't wait to see what the upcoming season has in store! Make your way to the annual Holiday on the Plaza event at Dufresne Plaza on December 2, 2023 from noon to 5:30 p.m. for ice skating on the ice rink, reindeer, photos with Santa, hot chocolate, horse sleigh and wagon rides along with lots of other fun activities. Be sure to stick around for the tree and Menorah lighting at 5:17 p.m. This year let’s show Lewiston just how much love they have from the east coast to the west coast.

When you want a break from skiing, consider enjoying some time on the NHL-sized rink. Rentals are available for both kids and adults. The rink typically opes in mid-December and remains open for fun until approximately mid-March. If you’re a hockey lover you’ll want to visit on Thursday night hockey night when sticks and pucks are allowed. During the season, the rink is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. during vacation weeks. Kids and adults can enjoy Saturday Family Night Ice Skating from 5 p.m to 7 p.m.
11. Skiing at Titcomb Mountain

We love the small, but mighty Titcomb Mountain which is located in Farmington. The 750-foot slope offers 16 alpine trails for all levels, including beginner all the way to expert. There’s also a terrain park for skiers and riders. This ski area is the perfect Maine spot.

There's a reason Mainers look forward to the Northern Lights event in Freeport every year! It's one of the most magical Christmas events in the state. It typically begins in mid-November and runs through the end of December. That's five beautiful weeks of holiday cheer while celebrating Christmas in Maine.
The fun kicks off at opening night on Friday, November 17, 4-8 p.m. with a tree lighting ceremony at 6:45 p.m. The tree is located just outside the L.L. Bean Flagship Store.
Every year we would attend for a little spark of holiday joy and the light tunnel, Christmas trees, and illuminated decorations never disappointed.
The main tree isn't the only one with lights at this special celebration. Throughout the area just about every branch is covered in colors.
In years past they have featured all sorts of magical ways to enjoy Christmas. In our experience, one of the best additions was the ice skating rink.

Children and adults alike gathered together to partake in a bit of holiday magic.
Visitors can also enjoy "Holidays Around the World" where visitors are invited to scan codes to learn more about how holidays are celebrated all over the world.
Each day of the week offers another fun activity to enjoy. On Mondays be sure to bring your pet for a photo op with Santa. From Fridays to Sundays, you can visit with Santa and his reindeer in the Holiday Activity Barn. The other days of the week also offer fun events including crafts and even a curling demonstration.

From December 1st through 10th, Visit Freeport hosts the annual Sparkle Celebration which kicks off with a Parade of Lights down Main Street. Freeport is one of the best Christmas towns in Maine, so you'll definitely want to check this out.
If it gets chilly be sure to visit the Warming benches. It offers a place to meet with friends and enjoy a cozy respite from the cold. We were surprised just how warm these benches were offering a great place to sit and still enjoy the lights without having to retreat inside.
Every couple of years L.L. Bean switches things up a bit, in years past they have had a massive singing Christmas tree, a cozy igloo, and an ice rink. This year they will be adding curling to the list of revolving attractions and allow guests to partake in a unique sport they may have never tried before.
Those who love the whimsical parts of the holidays will appreciate the model train village inside the L.L. Bean store. It's set in a quintessential New England town allowing for even more imagination.
There are events taking place throughout the entirety of this beautiful event, but whatever you do be sure to visit Santa and his reindeer! They sit right outside and love little visitors.
