If you’ve ever thought about going horseback riding in Louisiana, consider visiting Kisatchie National Forest. It’s one of the most beautiful places in the state—and the places to bring your horse are even more beautiful. Let’s explore.

There are a wide range of places where you could potentially enjoy horseback riding trails in Louisiana.

But most people who know about trails agree that one of the best places you can go is Kisatchie National Forest.

Some riders arrange for large scale horse riding trips, where you can gather up your friends and horseback ride through the park.

Being with a group always makes it more fun!

The Backbone Trail in Kisatchie is a particular favorite, giving riders a diverse landscape to traverse over the miles.

It's an awesome place to enjoy rare rock formations like the one pictured here.

The Backbone Trail is also known as the Longleaf trail and is near Alexandria, LA.

It's a 9 mile circular trail that is very well marked making it ideal for riders.

Other trails in the area that are popular include the Caroline Dorman Trail, a 12-mile trail that ends in the Kisatchie Bayou.

The best place to go camping if you want to pick up one of those trails is the Red Dirt Wildlife Management Preserve over two horse camps.

So even though you probably won't ever encounter horses with Santa outfits, there is certainly a charm to going riding in the winter.
