These 8 Photos Of New Orleans’ Bygone Amusement Park Will Have You Longing For The Good Old Days
Pontchartrain Beach was a beloved amusement park in New Orleans that closed 35 years ago but remains fondly remembered by locals.
No, we're not talking about Six Flags. For 55 years, Pontchartrain Beach was a popular attraction for New Orleanians to spend their days. It's been closed down now for about 35 years, but many locals have fond memories of spending their summers here. Let's take a walk down memory lane, shall we?
Pontchartrain Beach was an amusement part on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain.
The original location is the present day neighborhood of Lake Terrace.
It was founded by Harry J. Batt Sr., and opened in 1928.
It was moved in the 1930s to a new location at the lake end of Elysian Fields Avenue.
A popular attraction for locals, Pontchartrain Beach included a beach, a bathhouse, swimming pools, and amusement rides.
Visitors may remember the Zephyr, a wooden roller coaster that was a popular ride.
Years later when Jazzland opened in 2000, they had a similar roller coaster called the Mega Zeph, which was named after this roller coaster.
The park featured live music concerts with national touring acts.
Elvis Presley even made an appearance.
The park closed down in 1983 due to declining attendance.
But many New Orleanians have fond memories of spending their summer days here.
