Melrose Plantation is found in Natchitoches Parish, on LA 119 off of LA 493 in Melrose, LA.
This unique and historic home is a National Historic Landmark and is also known as the Yucca Plantation.
One thing that makes this plantation so unique was that it was built by and for free people of color, and it is one of the largest plantations in the United States to do so.
The Association for the Preservation of Historic Natchitoches owns the property, which holds regular tours of the building.
In 1832 construction began on this home, and it was completed by 1833 by the Metoyer family.
The Metoyer family had been free people of color for four generations by the time the home was built. Still to this day historians use analysis of this plantation site for understanding of Creole families in the area.
The grounds are completely gorgeous here and are worth a tour of their own!
But of course it is the architecture that keeps people returning to the plantation site.
This structure, known as the Africa house, has been under some historic scrutiny.
For many decades, local lore indicated that this home was built based on architectural designs of homes in Africa. More recently though historians have disproved this, and there is still controversy regarding the structure.
There are in fact a number structures on the property that really capture the essence of architectural design of the time.
There is also a plantation library filled with historic books and tracts that are simply amazing.
