The Largest Chimpanzee Sanctuary In The U.S. Is In Louisiana, And It’s Magical

Chimp Haven is the world's largest chimpanzee sanctuary, providing a natural and safe environment for retired research chimps.

Chimpanzees are a lot like us. They’re our closest biological relative, sharing more than 98% of our genetic blueprint with us, and because of that, they’ve been used for medical research for decades. Once the research has been done, these chimps can’t return to the wild and in many cases, need lifelong care. In 2000, Congress passed the Chimpanzee Health Improvement Maintenance and Protection (CHIMP) Act that allowed the government to establish a sanctuary for chimpanzees once they’ve retired from medical research, and they chose Chimp Haven to fill the role. Not only is it the largest chimpanzee sanctuary in the country, but it’s the largest in the world!

Chimp Haven is nestled within 200 forested acres in the Eddie D. Jones Nature Park, just outside of Shreveport in northern Louisiana.

There are more than 300 chimps living out their best days at Chimp Haven.

Most importantly, the chimps get to choose how they spend their time. No more cages and medical experiments for these boys and girls.

They have ample space to enjoy. They can spend their day climbing trees…

…taking walks…

…snacking…

…or hanging out with friends.

Chimp Haven has worked hard to recreate a natural and safe environment for these chimps, and is always improving the sanctuary and creating new challenges and activities for the chimps to keep them engaged.

A few times a year, the sanctuary opens its doors to the public.

These Discovery Days are such a unique experience. You'll get to watch these chimps, learn about their history, and see their beautiful personalities shine through.

You don't have to wait for a Discovery Day, though.

They also offer private tours, where you'll get behind-the-scenes access during your two-hour tour.

Visit the Chimp Haven website to schedule a tour and learn more. And while you're in the area, be sure to check out the nearby Monkey Trail, a fun hiking trail where you'll be able to hear the chimps as you walk the trail.
