Found in the French Quarter, the story of this mansion begins over 100 years ago, when the LaLaurie family moved into this stately mansion before the Civil War and the abolishment of slavery.

Madame LaLaurie, who ran the household, owned a number of slaves, which was standard for wealthy members of New Orleans’ French Quarter community.

Rumors began to emerge that Delphine Lalaurie didn’t treat her slaves appropriately, however, and some members of the French Quarter society began to be suspicious.

People witnessed her abusing her slaves and also heard that she had a number of slaves attempt to run away from her home.

One day, the whole story reached a boiling point when a fire broke out in the mansion. And what the firemen discovered when they reached the building could never be wiped from their memories.

Apparently, the slaves living at the home had set the fire themselves, seeking to escape their terrible conditions.

Some slaves were found chained up and evidence of ritual abuse in the basement was found there. It was clear that not only was Madame LaLaurie harsh, she was evil and treated the servants living in her home like animals.

A mob formed around her home after the people of New Orleans heard of her horrible treatment of her slaves.

Delphine Lalaurie was forced to escape the city in shame on a boat in the middle of the night, returning to France and never to be seen again!

Now all that remains of this story is the myths that surround it.
