Indianola is ground-zero for hot air ballooning. The city is about 10 miles south of Des Moines and it's home to the National Balloon Museum and U.S. Ballooning Hall of Fame.
The National Balloon Classic has been taking place since 1989. The 9-day event is held at Memorial Balloon Field and it draws nearly 100 hot air balloons.
Every year the event is a party - it features live music nightly, food and beverage vendors, activities for kids, fireworks and skydiver performances.
The balloons are spectacular, especially at night. The balloons don't fly during the heat of the day. They take to the air in a morning session and in an evening session. Morning flights launch at 6:00 a.m. and evening flights launch at 6:00 p.m., weather permitting.

This event is entirely put together by a local non-profit group and is located at Lake Manawa State Park, so it's one of the most laid-back of the shows we're spotlighting. 4. All American Extravaganza
Held in Altoona at the Prairie Meadows Casino and Racetrack, this all-day event takes place on July 3 and features live racing and music along with a large collection of food vendors. Then at dusk, the skies over the tracks turn into an amazing display of colors as the fireworks get started.
