You can't miss the Sergeant Floyd Monument as you drive down the road near Sioux City. This towering landmark is one of the state's most impressive sights.
But there's a lot more to this historical site and attraction than just an impressive obelisk. Its roots go back over two hundred years.
The site is the burial ground of Sgt. Charles Floyd, the quartermaster of the Lewis and Clark expedition and the only member of the crew to die.
When you're at the monument, make sure to take a look at the various informational plaques around. You'll be able to follow the path of the treacherous expedition.
While Floyd was exploring the Louisiana Purchase with Lewis and Clark, he was overcome by a sudden illness. Most modern doctors and historians believe he likely died of a ruptured appendix.
Of course, the main attraction of the monument is its stunning obelisk. At over a hundred feet high, the sandstone monument casts an impressive visage.
Make sure to walk around the grounds to get the best views. The flags are always at half-staff in honor of the fallen US Army veteran.
Before you leave, add your name to the historical record. The guestbook allows you to sign and leave your own personal tribute.
Finally, the monument offers one of the best views of Sioux City. Make sure to take a moment to stop, reflect, and take it in before you go.
