If there's any historical period that seems to routinely capture the hearts and minds of folks from all walks of life, it's the Old West. Thanks to old spaghetti westerns, larger-than-life legends, and other things, we have an idea of what life was like back then that's fun to explore sometimes. Here in Indiana, we weren't really a part of that leg of history - that's more Arizona's thing (go to Tombstone). But hey, great news, history geeks - that doesn't mean we can't get in on the fun. If you're craving an Old West adventure, there's a wild west train ride in Indiana waiting for you - come check it out.
Welcome to the Whitewater Valley Railroad, a gorgeous old railway that's graced our countryside for a good, long time.
Best of all, it shows no signs of slowing down - and why should it? It's a delight for so many reasons - my favorite of which is the Wild West Special.
This five-hour round-trip adventure (which includes a two-hour layover in historic Metamora) allows folks to experience the thrill of a train robbery in the Old West days - a far cry from our Midwestern roots.
The adventure takes place every third Saturday of the month between May 1st and October 31st. Summer and autumn are prime time - and I promise, it's a blast.
The kids will love the up-close and personal, fully immersive adventure from the get-go.
It's perfect for families and even date night situations; kids 2- 12 are $16 and folks 13 and up are $30. This might change from year to year, so make sure to book your tickets online ahead of time for the most up-to-date pricing.
Watch the countryside whir past as the story unfolds - an exciting tale of cowboys, outlaws and lawmen.
It's fun, exciting, and sure to thrill - you'll find yourself wanting to come back time and time again (and nobody's gonna stop you!).
Of course, the Wild West Special is far from the ONLY themed train excursion offered by Whitewater Valley Railroad; it's also known for its amazing scenic fall color routes as well.
When it comes to scenic train rides in Indiana, nobody does it better than Whitewater.
So, come on out to Indiana's best historic railroad and check out all the fun the Wild West Special - and all the other shows! - has to offer.
