Indiana has quite a few abandoned towns, buildings, amuseument parks, and other large structures that offer eerie glimpses at what once was. Sometimes, however, these abandoned sites can be strangely captivating. This abandoned theater in Indiana may be crumbling and decaying, but the pictures are absolutely incredible.
The Palace Theater in Gary, Indiana was once a bustling building for motion pictures and live performances. Today, the theater remains a piece of history long forgotten.
The Palace Theater was originally constructed in 1924 and opened its doors the following year. The theater became a city staple for live entertainment and new films.
The inside of the theater is worn down, to say the least, but there's something surprisingly beautiful about the decay. It's no wonder photographers from all over seek out this theater.
The decay in this theater is so severe because it's been largely scavenged by people through the decades. Now, the Palace Theater stands as one of the greatest symbols of urban decay.
In 1987, there was a plan to renovate this abandoned theater, as well as some nearby storefronts. Unfortunately, those plans fell through, leaving the theater empty and decaying.
While it's sad to think this theater was left to fall apart for over 45 years, the results of what can happen to a building without regular upkeep are interesting. The result is fairly haunting, but still captivating.
Here you can see a decaying piano in the midst of the building's decline. It's a powerful reminder of all of the music this building once housed.
You'll even find rows of seat still intact (though arguably worse for wear). With some imagination, you can almost picture how stunning this theater used to be.
In 2002, the front exterior of the theater was renovated to clean up the city for the Miss USA pageant. The marquee reading "Jackson Five Tonite" was also a new addition.
People in and near Gary still hold out hope that this abandoned building might one day be restored. Until then, spectators love to take in the dark and chilling beauty of this crumbling structure.
