Once upon a time, the town of New Harmony, Indiana, was platted in the spirit of creating a utopian society. Sure, it didn't quite work out that way, but goodness - the town that remains is a delight (and then some).
But nestled within the town of New Harmony is an incredible man-made structure that amazes everyone who sees it: a spectacular roofless church built of nothing but brick and wonder, instilling a sense of amazement in everyone who experiences it.
The Roofless Church is nothing short of a man-made miracle.
Looks kinda weird, sure, but goodness - it's a spectacle. This stunning, open-air cathedral is a welcome sign to everyone and anyone; it's a call to all who can hear it to come worship. Worship whomever or whatever you may... just do it here, together, beneath the vast stretch of the sky, in unity.
That's the idea—and it's a good one if you ask me. Personally, I'm all about unity, and a church is perfect for such an occasion. It's equal parts beautiful and meaningful, especially to the folks who hold it dear.
Sometimes called "The Rose," this unusual structure was designed and built by architect Philip Johnson in 1960. It's strange and beautiful, containing numerous works of art beneath its shelter. The entire grounds upon which it exists is a work of art, really, and I promise this is one of those places you'll definitely want to bring the camera for. The entire grounds is the church, really... the Rose is just the centerpiece.
New Harmony is an idyllic small town in Indiana that's sure to delight and charm for the entirety of your visit. I wouldn't blame you for considering a move, even - it's that lively and friendly. But while you're here, you'll definitely want to pay the Roofless Church a visit just for the splendor of it all, whether you're of the religious sort or not. It's an experience - one that should be had by all Hoosiers at least once.
