Explore An Illinois Natural Area And Enjoy Live Music At This Winter Festival

While I love a summer street festival, there is something special about a cold-weather celebration that's unique to the Midwest. There's nothing quite like bundling up and heading out to explore the outdoors when it's frozen over with icicles — plus, we Illinoisans never minded the cold, anyway. So for those seeking some winterscape adventuring, the WinterFest winter festival in Ingleside, Illinois is a great way to spend a day.

Each year, WinterFest is held at the Volo Bog State Natural Area in the Northeastern Illinois city of Ingleside. The area is a 1,150-acre wetland that has been recognized as a National Natural Landmark for more than 50 years.

The bog itself takes up 47.5 acres and was created by a melted glacier approximately 6,000 years ago. It has become known for its incredible uniqueness, including its fantastic boardwalk trail that takes you through the grounds.

From 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 14, the location will host WinterFest in its Visitor Center, complete with an array of activities, entertainment, and contests — plus tons of opportunities to explore the area and learn more about the park. There's a $10 suggested donation for adults, though it's not required for entry.

Live music will take place at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. with a photo contest taking place between sets. Photography featuring birds, landscapes, and animals will be featured for prizes.

The event will also feature nature- and winter-themed crafts for kids and families.

Attendees can also take guided tours of the bog every half hour between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. If there's snow (and this year there just might be!), visitors can also expect opportunities for hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snow sculpting. Pro tip: Keep an eye out for little paw prints in the snow — it's a great way to learn more about the creatures who call this place home.
