Take Your Holiday Shopping On The Road Along This Illinois Barn Sale Trail

Halloween is so last month, and that can only mean one thing: Christmas is straight ahead. The Prairie State is the perfect setting for the holiday season with gorgeous rural landscapes, farms, small-town celebrations, and enough local artisans to fill the Mall of America. And there's no better way to get all of the above and more than a visit to the yearly Christmas Barn Sale Trail in Metropolis, Illinois.

Located just north of the Ohio River on the border of Kentucky, Metropolis is a small Southern Illinois town known for its charm, quirkiness, and being the "hometown" of Superman. Once the colder season rolls around, it also transforms into a winter wonderland filled with barns-turned-shopping boutiques that are perfect for plucking out holiday gifts.

The annual Christmas Barn Sale Trail is a unique shopping experience that includes 10 locations within 10 miles of each other, each showcasing a number of vendors that offer antiques, homemade goods, crafts, treats, and much more.

The Massac County event takes place November 9-11, with VIP access beginning on Thursday, Nov. 9 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and regular shopping hours on Friday and Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. Each barn has its own closing time, so make sure to check out the shopping trail's website for specific info!

The shopping trail is a great opportunity to not only explore the fun town of Metropolis, but also discover incredible hidden gems and local treasures unique to the area.

Many vendors begin preparing far ahead of time to create and source new items each year. For someone who likes to collect mementos and tchotchkes like me, I would make sure I got one of Industrial Vintage Redo's annual ornaments.

As shoppers move between barns throughout the picturesque countryside, they'll encounter handmade items, vintage clothing (keep an eye out for ugly sweater collections!), artwork, jewelry, home decor, collectibles, and sweets like candies, cookies, breads, and hot chocolate.

The event is a bucket list must for Illinoisans looking to acquire both gifts and some early holiday cheer — but it's also a must-visit spot for Kentuckians and Missourians who share the Southern Illinois border, making it a perfect road trip, day trip, or even weekend getaway destination.

Of course, our four-legged friends aren't forgotten here! Homemade treats for Fido are on Santa's list and can be picked up along the trail.

Who knows, you may even make a new furry friend along the way — these are farms, after all! Sheep, cows, and other friendly farm animals await your pets and may even provide some of the materials used in local gifts available for purchase. Wool scarves and mittens are a classic!
