If you've been to the Country House Restaurant in Clarendon Hills, you may have heard the stories. Some people may have spoken about strange incidents that have happened within its walls over the years. With the inexplicable sounds of footsteps, a baby crying, pounding on the walls, and several sightings of a phantom woman, this Illinois restaurant is believed to be haunted.
In 1922, the original owner of the Country House building decided to build a roadhouse where people could meet and share food and drinks. The tavern and a small store were on the first floor while the owner and his family lived on the second floor.
Over the years, ownership of the roadhouse changed hands several times until 1974 when it was purchased by David Regnery and three others who transformed it into the Country House that it's known as today.
After building renovations in 1974, strange things at the Country House started happening. One evening, the owner was having a meeting with a contractor inside at the bar when all of a sudden, six shutters flew open at the same time.
A ghosthunter from Chicago was asked to come to the restaurant to investigate and he brought two mediums with him to help. They felt the presence of a young woman who was looking for someone and said she had died sometime in the 1950s.
To find out more about the ghostly young woman, Mr. Regnery called the previous owner who remembered a young woman that was dating the bartender at the restaurant. It was the 1950s. One evening, they had a fight and the upset young woman sped away in her car, crashed into a tree not too far from the restaurant, and died. It is believed that she is the one who haunts the Country House to this day.
Many people have had a paranormal experience at the Country House, especially those who have worked here over the years. From pounding on walls to crying babies, footsteps in empty rooms, objects moving, and the jukebox playing randomly in the middle of the night, the phantom woman has also been spotted and seems to enjoy playing pranks on people.
With all the ghostly activity going on at this restaurant, it's no wonder why it's become such a popular place for professional and amateur paranormal investigators.
Aside from the ghostly activity, the Country House is known for its delicious juicy burgers and rustic atmosphere. This neighborhood establishment is a great place to share a meal or have drinks with friends at the full-service bar.
