The town of Belleville, Illinois is fantastic at celebrating the holidays. Each year, the town is decorated and locals come out (even in the cold) for one of the most festive events around.
The 10th annual Christkindlemarket will take place November 24 - December 23, 2023. It is set up in Public Square downtown. The market dates back to the mid-16th century and represents Nuremberg, a town in Germany that was known for its traditional festival.
Visitors will find a plethora of goods, many they didn't even know existed. Shop German lace, hand-blown ornaments, hand-carved Santas, accessories, home decorations, and much more.
Of course, you'll find a plethora of Russian and Ukrainian nesting dolls for sale as well. Get some for the whole family, or better yet, one to represent each member of your family.
Another wonderful thing about this German Christmas market is that you'll get to taste foods you've never heard of before and perhaps some you've always wanted to try. Like any good festival, the food is a huge draw for customers.
Children will have the chance to visit Santa here, and live reindeer are scheduled to visit one day each weekend from the end of November through Christmas.
Each year, there are also parades, a tree-lighting ceremony, wood-carving demonstrations, and live music to keep bringing locals back to the square.
The market includes traditional events and activities to honor the culture from whence the idea came. Though it may be cold, nighttime is the best time to visit due to all the lights.
Admission is free and both the days and times change a bit throughout the month, so be sure to check their website for the exact information on the day you plan to visit.
