Evanston Is a Walkable City in Illinois Known for Its Otherworldly Beauty

Lovers of small towns with fall head over heels for Evanston, a stunningly beautiful, highly walkable city in Illinois.

North of downtown Chicago is a city known for its incredible beauty. Evanston is located right on the shores of Lake Michigan, and as a result, it looks and feels like a beach town. In fact, it is a beach town. When you're here, it doesn't matter that Illinois is landlocked; the lake is the perfect backdrop for this little Midwestern paradise, and I think you'll adore it from the moment you arrive.

Welcome to Evanston, a city with a population of more than 75,000. It's a city that clings to its small-town status even as it grows every year. It's one of Illinois's best up-and-coming small cities, and it's truly a delight. The folks who live here are as wonderful as the town itself, offering friendly smiles and excellent advice for all the best places to see while you're here. Evanston will supercharge your love for Illinois, and there's so much to do around here that you'll never need to worry about getting bored.

Foodies will love the list of options they have, all within easy walking distance of, well, everything else. Evanston is rated as one of the "most walkable cities" in the entire state, and I love it for that. It's an enormous part of its overall charm, and anyone who prefers to go through life without a vehicle will find that it's an excellent place to call home. But, I digress: I have to spend a moment on the restaurants!

Evanston is easily the foodie capital of Illinois. With dozens of incredible, one-of-a-kind restaurants to choose from, you won't have to visit the same place(s) twice if you don't want to, but they're all so excellent that you'll absolutely want to come back - it's a conundrum, but a worthy one. A delicious one!

There is no bad time of year to visit Evanston. It is jaw-dropping all year; each season brings multiple reasons to experience it. Flowers bloom in the spring and summer, and greenery covers seemingly everything. In the fall, the trees and greenery come ablaze with color, and walking through town feels almost surreal. In the winter, the whole town becomes a Thomas Kinkade painting; it doesn't feel like real life, so you might have to pinch yourself a time or two just in case.

The town is incredibly photogenic. Walk the shoreline of Lake Michigan, and you'll see that everywhere you turn, it's beautiful, and Evanston is well-known for its majestic, photogenic nature. It's 100 percent postcard-worthy, and you'll feel as if you've stepped into a fantasy novel more than a little Midwestern town.

Shoppers will also adore Evanston; there's an amalgamation of wonderfully unique shops and spots that you'll only find here. My favorite store is Dave's Down to Earth Rock Shop, but your opinion may vary. It might be tough to pick just one shop! I could list 40 more, but I don't have the space in this short article to do so. Just take my word for it and go walk around Evanston - it's incredible, and if the beauty doesn't blow your mind the community will.

In the end, Evanston is so much more than a dot on the map north of Chicago. From sunrise strolls along Lake Michigan to meals at locally loved restaurants, every moment here feels just plain lovely. It’s a place where you can wander without a plan, discover something unexpected around every corner, and feel completely at ease doing it. The walkability, the warmth of the community, the postcard-perfect scenery, and the endless things to taste, browse, and explore all come together to create something truly special. Evanston proves you don’t need an ocean to enjoy a beach town vibe, and you don’t need a big city to find big experiences. Feeling inspired?
