Don’t Miss Idaho’s Winter Carnival This February

You’ll forget all about the chill of winter at this wild and wonderful winter festival.

Winter in Idaho is anything but dreary thanks to our state's stunning landscapes, bluebird skies, and countless opportunities to embrace the season with frosty cold-weather fun. To make it even better, we also like to kick the season up a few notches by throwing in some epic festivals too! From dazzling ice sculptures to thrilling snow sports, fireworks, parades, and even week-long block parties, the Gem State knows how to offer a much-needed escape from any brewing cabin fever.

But of all the winter activities and celebrations on deck throughout the season, perhaps no other festival shines quite as brightly as the Sandpoint Winter Carnival — an incredible 10-day, all-ages extravaganza that not only has a little something for everyone but just so happens to take place in one of the most spectacular winter settings in the state.

Every year since 1973, Sandpoint has pulled out all the stops to make the last celebration of the season one to remember. The town's annual Winter Carnival is a full week and a half of activities, contests, celebrations, and good old-fashioned snow-centric hoopla — so much so that folks from all around the Panhandle come to enjoy the festivities.

And honestly, you couldn't ask for a better setting for a celebration of all things winter. Sandpoint is prime ski resort territory, with locals flocking to Schweitzer Mountain Resort every year to conquer the slopes and embrace near-daily fresh powder. The town's setting in the middle of the Selkirk and Cabinet Mountains makes it an absolute dream for winter enthusiasts!

The festival happenings kick off on February 13, 2026 with the spectacular Parade of Lights downtown. Often, special guests or groups will take part and/or follow behind the parade, so you might just see fire twirlers, dancers, or acrobats parading through the streets too.

Following the parade, what better way to celebrate the month of love than with a fantastic block party? PDO Winery, Connie's Café, Barrel 33, and many more will be opening their doors for special live music performances, cocktails, and delicious hors d'oeuvres, plus plenty of extra festivities lining the streets — think photo booths, pop-up shops, hot chocolate stops, and fantastic giveaways.

And that's all just downtown. The festivities are going on the mountainside too! Head up to Schweitzer to enjoy seasonal drinks at their outdoor Snow Bar while you ogle the scenery, or head to Western Pleasure Guest Ranch (one of the most gorgeous guest ranches in the state) to enjoy a lavish dinner and romantic sleigh ride through the snowy countryside.

And that's a wrap for day one! Until February 22, 2026, you'll find a whirlwind of concerts, trivia nights, magic shows, and headline events like the K9 Keg Pull and Pickleball Tournament, and so much more! Check out the full lineup of special events on the festival website. Then, wrap up the festivities with a phenomenal fireworks show at Schweitzer. This epic finale is THE BEST way to admire winter's beauty in the most dazzling way.

Skijoring, fiddling, fun runs, markets, or food — whatever your favorite part of festival season is, the Sandpoint Winter Carnival has a little bit of it all.
