This Iconic Holiday Event in Georgia Is the One Thing You Must Do This Season

We're in the heart of the holiday season here, and you might feel overwhelmed to experience as much of it as you can. After all, Christmas in Georgia translates to decked-out Main Streets, impressive holiday displays, winter strolls, small-town shops, and much more. But we'd argue that it's mostly about the magic of the season and spending time with loved ones. If you agree, then there's one iconic holiday event in Georgia that you simply must experience this year. IllumiNights at the Zoo is one of the state's most popular events, and it's not hard to see why.

Welcome, one and all, to IllumiNights, presented by Georgia Power. This annual Chinese Lantern Festival takes place this year from now until January 19th, 2025, between 5:30 and 9:30 p.m. It takes place at Zoo Atlanta, and it's without a doubt one of the single best things to do in the city over the holidays. Why, you may ask? The illuminated displays aren't just festive; they're works of art.

You and your crew can enjoy an entire mile of illuminated displays, each one seemingly more magical than the next. It gives you time and space to reflect on the year all the while contemplating the beautiful creatures of our planet.

If you visit on a particularly cold day, be sure to warm up with a cup of hot cocoa; it's the best way to keep your hands toasty. Those over 21 can also opt for a custom cup of spirits, another fun way to experience the holiday cheer. Another festive activity? You can roast marshmallows by the fire after enjoying all the magic of the lantern walk. It's the perfect, coziest way to end the experience.

One thing to note: You won't see any of the live animals, as most of them go inside for the night where they sleep. So be sure to come back to the zoo during the daytime!
