Fort King George was a crucial southern outpost for the British Empire from 1721 to 1736.

Most of the buildings that are left remaining were made out of wood in 1721 when the fort was constructed.

The problem with the fort however, is that they entire company endured many hardships throughout the years.

Not only did the fort find disease knocking at its door, but also the threat of Indian and Spanish attacks, not to mention the unfamiliar coastal climate.

The fort eventually was abandoned, leaving a hauntingly beautiful memory of days passed.

It wasn’t until James Oglethorpe brought in Scottish Highlanders in 1736 to settle the land, and eventually called it Darien.

It became the most prominent export center for lumber until 1925.

Now, this 18th century fortification has become a popular destination for public tours.

Using old drawings, records and historical accounts, Fort King Georgia has been rebuilt, fit with a museum, original officers’ quarters, barracks, front-line cannons, a moat and a blockhouse to name a few.
