5 Easy Day Trips You Can Take From Miami, Florida, My Favorite Included
Looking for the best day trips from Miami? Discover 5 fun and easy getaways, from Key Largo’s reefs to the beach town of Delray—all just a short drive away!
Living in or around Miami, Florida, sometimes feels like a fever dream. Locals always understood what a magical and alluring city it is. And while Miami is often the destination for many, sometimes it's nice to get outside the city and explore more. When you're craving a quick escape or just a change of scenery, you don't need to go far to find something extraordinary. As you cruise outside the city limits, away from the condo-filled skylines and vibrant energy, you’ll soon discover mangrove tunnels, turquoise waters, and charming beach towns. Here are five easy and unforgettable day trips from Miami, including my personal favorite—because let’s be honest, even paradise benefits from a little variety.
1. Everglades National Park – For Wildlife and Wild Views
Drive time: About 1 hour
The River of Grass is closer than you think, that is, of course, depending on what time you leave. Everglades National Park is a sprawling subtropical wilderness that offers airboat tours, kayaking, and hiking trails through mangrove tunnels and sawgrass prairies. Don’t be surprised if you spot an alligator sunbathing or a roseate spoonbill showing off its bright pink feathers. Shark Valley is a great starting point for newbies, especially if you want to rent bikes and ride the scenic 15-mile loop. You can ride at your own pace, while viewing gators up close and personal, and climb the tower for a bird's eye view of the area. It's one of the best wildlife encounters inside Everglades National Park.
Pro tip: Visit during the dry season (November to April) to avoid the bugs and see the most wildlife. Although reptiles and gators are plentiful during the summer and wet season, the heat inside the wetlands can be unbearable. Start early if you plan to visit in the summer.
2. Key Largo – For Underwater Adventures (My Personal Favorite)
Drive time: About 1 hour and 15 minutes
Driving across the scenic Overseas Highway, seeing the striking blue waters is a sensory adventure on its own, but getting to the first of the Florida Keys, Key Largo, is a diver’s dream. Home to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first underwater park in the U.S., it’s the go-to spot for exploring coral reefs, shipwrecks, and schools of tropical fish. If you’d rather stay dry, hop on a glass-bottom boat tour or relax on Cannon Beach. Seafood here is a must—don't leave without trying the conch fritters or a slice of tangy Key lime pie. I love Key Largo because it's a quick drive; I don't need to head all the way down to Key West. The tradeoff? It feels like I'm in a tropical paradise the entire time without adding an extra two hours to my trip. Flip-flops required!
Pro tip: Book a snorkeling tour to the Christ of the Abyss statue—an underwater icon you’ll never forget. For the clearest waters for snorkeling, visit from December to April.
3. Boca Raton – For a Touch of Class and Coastal Charm
Drive time: About 1 hour
Boca Raton might not scream excitement, but it whispers luxury and style. Spend your day at the Mizner Park shopping and dining complex, play in the Sugar Sand Park with the kids, or stroll the stunning Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, where you can learn about sea turtle conservation. The beaches are clean and calm, perfect for a laid-back afternoon with a good book and a strong iced coffee. When the evening settles, head to Crazy Uncle Mike's to hang out and listen to live music with the locals. The vibes are laid-back, the food is good, and the happy hour drinks are some of the best in town.
Pro tip: Check out Red Reef Park for one of the best snorkel spots in the area.
4. Delray Beach – For Artsy Vibes and Small-Town Cool
Drive time: About 1 hour
Delray Beach delivers charm in spades. This walkable, artsy coastal town is known for its vibrant downtown along Atlantic Avenue, packed with unique boutiques, cafes, and public art. Start your day with a visit to the Pineapple Grove Arts District, then grab a Cuban sandwich or an acai bowl and head to the wide, uncrowded beach. It’s got all the fun of a bigger beach city but with a chill, creative twist. The laid-back beach here is part of its charm. You'll soon realize why we ranked it as our top 6 beaches in Florida.
Pro tip: Visit the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens just west of town for an unexpectedly serene cultural experience.
5. Biscayne National Park – For Crystal Clear Waters and Snorkeling Paradise
Drive time: About 1 hour
Unlike most national parks, Biscayne National Park is 95% water, which makes it one of the most unique adventures near Miami. The park is a marine playground of coral reefs, shipwrecks, and mangrove islands. You’ll need to book a boat tour or rent a kayak to explore, but once you’re on the water, it’s pure magic. Don’t miss a snorkeling trip to the Maritime Heritage Trail, where submerged shipwrecks tell the story of Florida’s maritime past. Say hello to the locals who will be boating, paddling, and fishing on the water.
Pro tip: Pack a waterproof camera—you’ll want to remember these views. And come during the winter and spring to spot manatees and dolphins.
