This Delightful General Store In Delaware Will Have You Longing For The Past
Wilson's General Store in Georgetown, Delaware, offers a nostalgic experience with its historic charm and renowned sandwiches.
Life in Slower, Lower Delaware is peaceful and old fashioned. It's not uncommon to venture into a town where everyone knows everyone, and neighbors still help each other out every day. One relic of this laid back, throwback style of living is Wilson's General Store, located in Georgetown. Head down to Springfield Rd and Gravel Hill Rd, and step back in time.
Prior to becoming a General Store in the 1930s, Wilson's used to house a one-room schoolhouse.
This historic building has been an important fixture of Georgetown life for nearly 100 years.
Jim Wilson purchased the store from his father, Marshall, in 1970.
Marshall Wilson had been running the general store since 1944. In those years, it became a one-stop shop for Georgetown residents to purchase hunting or fishing supplies, snacks, groceries, guns and the best sandwiches in town. Plus, it was easy to catch up on small town gossip!
The store is a local legend, known for the friendliness of the man behind the country and the line cooks that make the best sandwiches and subs in Sussex County.
Grab whatever you need for your lunch here, and I promise, you'll be delighted!
Wilson's is well known for having the best scrapple, egg and cheese in the state - and let's face it, probably the world.
Nobody eats scrapple the way Delawareans do, and Wilson's cooks get it right every single time.
The lunch menu is worth checking out, too!
Grab some chips, a coke, and a BLT or Club sandwich if you're not in the mood for breakfast at noon. The fresh ingredients and homestyle sandwiches really make you long for the past.
In fact, stepping into Wilson's store feels like you're stepping back in time.
So walk in and take yourself back to a simple time when the town revolved around a General Store as its meeting place and corner grocery, and where everybody knows your name.
Wilson's Store is so important to the little town of Georgetown that it was recently featured in a book by a local Delaware writer.
"Growin' up Country" features an entire chapter on Wilson's! You can pick up a copy at the store, and learn more about the old-time way of living that many in Georgetown are lucky enough to still hold on to.
I love the feeling of escaping to the simple, slower way of life in the southern part of our state! Along with Wilson's Store, the entire town of Bowers Beach feels like A Quiet Fishing Town In Delaware That Seems Frozen In Time. What a relaxing, peaceful place it is.
