Everyone In Connecticut Should Check Out These 15 Tourist Attractions, According To Locals

There's a lot to draw visitors to Connecticut. From our restaurants to our charming small towns to our phenomenal museums, the fun really never ends in the Nutmeg State. We recently asked our readers at Only In Connecticut what attractions they think belong on any Connecticut Bucket List, for locals and tourists alike. Here are a few of the top responses for the best attractions in Connecticut:

1. Cornwall

Kicking off our list of the best attractions in Connecticut, it's not surprising that the little town of Cornwall was frequently mentioned by our readers. This town of 1,500 has a lot to offer, with a wonderful historical society, some delicious restaurants, and Mohawk State Forest. It's one of the most charming towns in Litchfield County.

2. Bolton

Another small town that got a lot of mentions was Bolton, a Hartford suburb that's home to the beautiful (and criminally underrated) Bolton Notch State Park.

3. Mystic

It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that Mystic was frequently mentioned as the best town in Connecticut. This little village is phenomenal, and a popular summer destination for many. The historical attractions here are marvelous, and you can also enjoy a world-class aquarium and so much more.

4. Westbrook

Westbrook was another frequently-mentioned attraction. This shoreline town is home to the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge, Connecticut's only National Wildlife Refuge and a beautiful place for a stroll.

5. Guilford

Guilford has a population of more than 20,000, but it has a wonderful small town feel that makes it a wonderful place for a weekend getaway in Connecticut. There's a charming town green, blocks of boutique shops, and even a little beach.

6. New Milford

Another town mentioned quite a bit in our Facebook comments was New Milford. One of my favorite things about this Litchfield County town is all the wonderful outdoor attractions here. Lovers Leap State Park is one of the most beautiful parks in the state.

7. Lake Waramaug

Lake Waramaug was by far the most often-mentioned body of water by our readers. This 656-acre lake is a popular spot for recreational activities and is a wonderful place for a summer swim. Most of the shoreline is privately-owned, but you can access the lake via the state park in New Preston that shares its name.

8. Harkness Memorial State Park: Waterford

I was excited to see Harkness Memorial State Park mentioned by a number of readers, as it's one of my favorite places in Connecticut. With a beach and historic mansion and beautiful garden, there's so much to enjoy here!

9. Kent Falls: Kent

Kent Falls is not only a beautiful waterfall, it's also among the most accessible waterfalls in Connecticut. It doesn't require an all-day trek through the woods to reach like many waterfalls do... you can pretty much drive right up to it!

10. Devil's Hopyard State Park: East Haddam

Of all the parks in the state, it's quite possible that Devil's Hopyard State Park has the creepiest legends surrounding it. In fact, many say this place just might be haunted! Eerie stories or not, it's absolutely stunning, with a lovely waterfall and some of the prettiest trails in Connecticut.

11. Island Beach: Greenwich

Not surprisingly, a few must-visit beaches were mentioned by our readers. One that got quite a few recommendations was Island Beach, just off the coast of Greenwich. This stunning island is only accessible via seasonal ferry.

12. New Haven

New Haven is a good bit larger than many of the cities on the list, but even so, it's considered one of the most walkable towns in America. There's a lot to do here, whether you're a fan of Yale University, want to check out the wonderful art museums, or want to taste some apizza.

13. Talcott Mountain: Simsbury

Talcott Mountain State Park has some of the best views in Connecticut - the panoramic sights from the top of the Heublin Tower are pretty incredible!

14. East Rock: New Haven

East Rock Park is such an underrated gem. The rocky cliffs and lighthouse make for such a stunning landscape, and there are some wonderful trails here that the whole family can enjoy.

15. Walnut Beach: Milford

Last, but certainly not least, on our list of reader recommendations is Walnut Beach, an ultra-relaxing sandy paradise in Milford. What a great place for a waterfront stroll!
