When most people think of waterfront cliffs, their minds go to California, or perhaps Maine. If you haven't spent much time exploring the Nutmeg State, you may not even be familiar with our very own waterfront cliffs! East Rock is one of the best hidden gems in New Haven, CT. This 425-acre park is right on the border of New Haven and Hamden, and is just perfect for a fun family outing. There are all kinds of amenities as you'd expect from a top-rated park in New Haven, CT, but it's also got some unique scenery that makes it one of the best outdoor attractions in Connecticut. That's certainly not a view you see every day!
The unique geology here was formed hundreds of millions of years ago during the continental shift. Much of the molten rock that was exposed during this time formed basalt, a hard rock that doesn't erode easily.
That means that while much of the surrounding land was eroded away, these dramatic cliffs remained.
The park provides amazing views of both the Mill River and Lake Whitney.
On a clear day, you can see for miles and miles from this high vantage point, giving you an opportunity to enjoy city views as well as the natural surroundings.
You'll find tons of trails here perfect for exploring, no matter your skill level.
This is such a spectacular place for a visit at any time of year - you really can't beat that scenery!
