The English Station power plant is now a century old, and though it ceased operations more than three decades ago, it still stands in the middle of our largest cities, an oversized giant of the urban landscape. English Station was a thermal power plant that was built on Ball Island in the Mill River. The river is right in between two of New Haven's most popular neighborhoods, Wooster Square and Fair Haven.

The plant was constructed between 1924 and 1929 and was powered by coal and oil to produce electricity up until 1991.

The property was sold multiple times over the years, and the owners have received hefty penalties for various violations.

Due to contaminants like asbestos and PCBs, the power plant cannot easily be torn down to create new businesses or housing.

Several structures at the eight-acre property have been demolished, but the vast majority of the sprawling power plant still stands today.

The area surrounding this abandoned power plant in New Haven, CT was once a thriving industrial area. It remains to be seen what the future holds for English Station and Ball Island.
