Salida, Colorado Is Home To The State’s Largest National Historic District

If you have ever had the pleasure of visiting a National Historic District, you know that it is home to not only ample history but also one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants, art galleries, and other unique surprises. While many communities are home to these historical treasures, only one can be home to the largest, which, in our state, is Salida, CO. In fact, it might just be one of the best places to live in Colorado, given its breathtaking scenery, storied buildings, and surrounding natural wonders. See if you agree with our verdict.

Located in Chaffee County, Salida is a scenic mountain community that is home to nearly 6,000 residents.

Translating to "exit" in Spanish, Salida was officially founded in 1880 and - like many other communities of its time - housed miners and explorers, as well as railroad workers, farmers, and ranchers.

When you visit Salida today, you will be treated to a stunning mountain landscape, as well as ample shopping, dining, museums, art exhibits, and much more.

I love exploring Salida because of its unbeatable small town charm, delightful bars and restaurants, and opportunities for adventure.

Salida is also home to the largest historic district in Colorado, which spans several blocks and intersections (namely E, F, and G Streets plus the intersecting blocks of Sackett, First, Second, and Third) and includes 100 buildings!

While many cities have lost their most historic dwellings through the years, Salida has managed to maintain and preserve most of its original architecture, making for a downtown area that you will never forget.

As if you needed another reason to visit Salida, it is not only home to the most extensive National Historic District but also Colorado's first Creative Arts District, complete with 20 studios and galleries.

So much exploring is bound to work up an appetite and fortunately, there's no shortage of delicious restaurants to try.

One of my favorites is Moonlight Pizza & Brewpub, an incredible local pizzeria with an extensive beer selection.
