The Museum of Colorado Prisons is a haunted former women's prison turned museum with unique and creepy exhibits.
Whether it is close to Halloween or not, some Coloradans just cannot enough of the creepy and paranormal, which has us looking for haunted places year-round. In this case, that place is a haunted Colorado prison-turned-museum that is not for the faint of heart:
Welcome to the Museum of Colorado Prisons (or Colorado Prison Museum), a former women's prison turned museum that is arguably one of the most unique in the country.
Hiding away near the very much active Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility (don't get the two confused!), the Museum of Colorado Prisons was built in 1935 and, during that time, housed some of the country's most notorious female inmates.
Like many small jails, the former Canon City Women’s Correctional Facility would falter, leaving it empty until a group of locals came together to petition for the museum in the 1980s.
Today, the Colorado Prison Museum is home to some downright unique and creepy exhibits and artifacts, including a once-working gas chamber, replicas of cells, inmate art, and much more.
When you visit, be sure to keep your eyes and ears peeled, as the museum is said to be home to the spirits of inmates past!
According to encounters, staff and visitors alike have reported everything from the sounds of screams and coughs to mysterious orbs and the scent of fresh tobacco.
While guests can experience the paranormal on their own, the Museum offers guided tours and ghost hunts for an additional fee.
Admission to the Colorado Prison Museum is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors (ages 65+), and $8 for children (ages 6 to 12).
