A Terrifying Tour Of This Haunted Prison In Colorado Is Not For The Weak

The Museum of Colorado Prisons in Cañon City is considered one of the most haunted places in Colorado, offering tours that explore its eerie history and paranormal activity.

Whether you're a believer in the paranormal or not, prisons will always make you feel uneasy. There's a lot of unnerving energy built up in prison walls, and it often lays the groundwork for ghost stories, paranormal encounters, and supernatural occurrences. There's one historic prison in Cañon City that might just be the most haunted prison in Colorado, and you can take a tour of this Cañon City haunted prison and judge it for yourself. Let's explore this Colorado prison museum.

Located in Cañon City, the Museum of Colorado Prisons (or Colorado Prison Museum) is housed in a former women's prison building, which was originally constructed in 1935.

See this daunting-looking structure? It is the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility, which is adjacent to the museum.

This building is still very much in use and does not offer prison tours, so do NOT get the two confused.

After sitting vacant for several years, residents of Fremont County pushed to make the former women's prison a museum, proving itself to be an interesting new concept at the time.

The Colorado State Legislature approved the request in 1986 and the Colorado prison museum opened in 1988.

Since opening its doors to the public, the museum has welcomed more than 200,000 visitors from all over the U.S. and the world.

The Museum of Colorado Prisons is home to over 140 years worth of state penitentiary history and includes such fascinating exhibits as an inmate art wall...

...a former gas chamber...

...and even a section about Colorado's most notorious inmates.

During your prison tour, you'll learn about the history of Colorado's prison systems, infamous inmates, and, of course, some of the paranormal encounters that people have experienced at this haunted prison in Colorado.

Now that you know a little more about the history of the museum, you may be wondering what makes it so haunted. According to numerous reports, the premises are plagued with the lingering spirits of those who resided in the women's prison. When you visit the museum, keep your eyes, ears, and nose peeled for the common sight of orbs, the sounds of unexplained coughing and screams, and the scent of fresh tobacco (when no one is around). The museum offers several paranormal investigation tours where you can spend a few hours patrolling the halls, seeing if you can have a supernatural experience of your own. They even offer a few overnight events, too...if you're brave enough to spend an entire night here.
