America’s Byway is a thoughtfully mapped route of 110 miles, most identifiable by its iconic orange and blue signs.
The Ohio & Erie Canalway is both a National Heritage Area and part of this path, as the byway follows the old canal as much as possible.
The path stretches through some 58 communities in total, so it offers an excellent way to get a sampling of Northern Ohio culture.
There is, naturally, a bit of overlap with the Towpath Trail, so bring your bikes and hiking boots if you plan on pulling off the road and exploring.
And you'll find yourself brushing elbows with history throughout your travels, passing through historic communities beyond Cleveland like Jaite, Peninsula, Akron, Canal Fulton, and Dover.
In Cleveland, this scenic route begins just north of Steelyard Commons and continues into Summit County as it winds along the roads of Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
The Ohio & Erie Canalway does wind south all the way into Tuscarawas County, but this path is well-marked and is backed by maps to help you make the journey.
There is so much to do along this scenic path that you could easily spend days exploring it. From the West Side Market to various trailheads and museums, this path abounds with culture.
