I Visited Santa Barbara’s First Public Beach Club and Couldn’t Believe How Affordable It Was
Relax and soak up the sun (sans worrying about brining your own stuff) at this recently opened Central Coast community hangout space.
Santa Barbara’s most talked-about coastal destination, located right on East Beach, has to be The Barbara Beach Club. This public beach club has a fresh take on relaxation that's approachable, community-focused, and unlike anything else on California's Central Coast. It's the perfect spot to spend beach days over the summer.
At first, I’ll admit I was skeptical. Santa Barbara already boasts beautiful beaches—how could another “beach club” set itself apart? But after experiencing it firsthand, I was completely won over by the vibe, amenities, and accessibility this spot offers. Here's everything you need to know before visiting this stunning beach experience in Central California.
A First-of-Its-Kind Public Beach Club on the Central Coast

What makes The Barbara Beach Club stand out? For starters, it's the first public beach club of its kind in the Santa Barbara area. Having lived on the Central Coast for years, I’ve never seen anything quite like this curated, communal space designed for everyone, locals and visitors alike.
Unlike the exclusive, members-only beach clubs you might find in places like Malibu or Ibiza, The Barbara keeps things laid-back, welcoming, and affordable. You don’t need to know someone or pay steep membership fees to enjoy a relaxing beach day with all the essentials provided.

After spending time relaxing here, I think The Barbara can be an excellent option for people visiting the area who might not have brought their gear (such as beach chairs, a cooler, or towels). Everything I needed for a solid beach day was included in the reservation fee. I felt like I didn’t have to worry about bringing anything.

A Variety of Rental Options for Groups Big and Small
I just had the regular Club Set reservation for two, but there are different levels of reservations, ranging from a couple of chairs at a lower price to a whole 40-person cabana area (and you can rent the area for hours at a time, which is great for hosting an event). The “Club Set” is the perfect option for two people. The Chaise Chaise (pronounced ‘Shay Shay’) is meant for four to six people, featuring a set of comfy chaise lounge chairs and club chairs with towels, a side table, a cooler bag, an umbrella, and the option for a small canopy. The “Copa Cabana” accommodates up to 14 people and features cozy sectionals and club chairs, all set under a canopy, along with a box cooler and a table.
The Grand Cabana, which can accommodate up to 25, is designed to host the entire crew. This option features a large shade canopy, cozy sectionals, and a row of club sets. The Anacapa Cabana is nicknamed "The Crown Jewel" and can host up to 40 people. This private, Riviera-style beach club area of your own includes a row of club sets, chaise lounges, and cozy sectionals under a shade canopy, with multiple box coolers, and the option to add a dining table.

A Safe, Sober-Friendly Coastal Hangout
The beach club offers a selection of non-alcoholic drinks and snacks. It does not serve alcohol, which I think makes it perfect for the sober-curious folks and solo travelers (like me, if I were traveling as a solo female!). It felt like a safe place to leave my belongings, perfect for when I wanted to go swimming and be taken care of while relaxing on the beach.
Another unique element of this business I learned about is its partnership with the local Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department. The money spent at this beach club goes toward wildlife education, preservation, and conservation. The land on which the beach club is located is technically Parks and Recreation land, and by paying to use the club, you’ll be supporting the organization.

The Vision Behind The Barbara Beach Club
I visited this beach club last Saturday, over Memorial Day Weekend, and I enjoyed it. It was relatively crowded, but still felt like a chill atmosphere for a "beach club." I met up with the founder and owner, Brian Jones, for a conversation. He told me about how he built this club space from the ground up based on his experience overseeing his other business, Bliss Beach (which hosts events like pop-up beach lounges, picnics, and special events services on the sand in places like LA, Orange County, San Diego, and more across California).

The Barbara is open to the public seasonally, from May to October. It's open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, but only on the weekends in October. Seasonal passes are also available for locals who want to make it their official summer hangout spot. Because of this long season and generally accessible hours, it's definitely become a solid part of the Central Coast's infrastructure.
Final Thoughts: Why The Barbara Beach Club Is Worth a Visit
What I appreciated most about this destination is how the beach club feels like a community. Jones told me they already have repeat customers who come back to hang out there, day after day.

Jones told me that every single morning, he and his team have to set up and take down all the equipment and store it for the next day. They get to the beach at the crack of dawn and don't leave until sunset. It’s a labor of love, and a space that Central Coast locals and visitors alike can enjoy. I think it’s a great concept to be able to visit the beach without worrying about bringing your own cooler, towels, and chairs, and instead rent them for an affordable price while being taken care of by beach attendants.
The community element of the beach club also intrigues me. If I were a regular member, I’d enjoy getting to know the other members and forming new relationships with the people in my town in this unique and sober "third space" environment.
Book a two-, four-, six-, or full-day reservation today, with tickets starting at $40 per party. If you live further away, consider taking a California road trip to this fun beachfront attraction.
