Southern California’s Rising Star: This Underrated City Is Ideal for Any Traveler

Visit this quietly amazing destination in Southern California for food, shopping, and adventure.

There are some California cities that receive all the tourist attention—big cities like Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and Sacramento, and smaller cities like Santa Barbara and Long Beach. But one of my favorite cities seems to fly under the radar for most people. Hiding in plain sight between the more popular Northern and Southern California destinations is San Luis Obispo, an incredibly cool little city with something (or several things, really) to offer every traveler.

Those who have heard of San Luis Obispo (also known locally as SLO) probably know it for its excellent public college, California Polytechnic State University. Like any great college town, downtown SLO is full of wonderful restaurants, retail shops, quirky boutiques (Junkgirls is an absolute must-visit!), galleries, and more. Short blocks lined with lots of trees, historic buildings, and tons of character make it a delightfully walkable area.

The San Luis Obispo Public Market has a variety of great eats, perfect if you’re traveling with a group, want an eclectic meal, or are just a bit indecisive. And be sure to stop by Brown Butter Cookie Company for the most unique and addictive cookies you’ve ever tasted. On Thursday evenings, downtown’s main street, Higuera, turns into a vibrant farmers’ market with dozens of vendors filling five blocks with arts and crafts, baked goodies, fresh produce, live entertainment, and some delicious BBQ. For those over 21, there are several wine-tasting rooms close to downtown and even more wineries in the surrounding areas.

SLO is home to one of the most unique and historic hotels in Central California, the Madonna Inn. Whether you choose to stay in one of its individually themed rooms, dine in the whimsical pink and gold Gold Rush Steak House, or indulge in a giant slice of Pink Champagne cake at the Madonna Inn Copper Cafe, a visit to this hotel is an unforgettable experience.

Aside from a trip-worthy downtown, SLO is central to many wonderful little towns and some spectacular adventures. Within 15 minutes in any direction is something fabulous to see, do, or eat. Take a scenic 20-minute drive to the beach at Morro Bay with its famous Morro Rock. Walk along the picturesque bluffs at Montaña de Oro State Park. Head south instead to visit the adorable beachside town of Avila Beach, Pismo Beach, or Arroyo Grande—where, by the way, a tiny award-winning wood-fired pizzeria awaits. Or spend some time on the water at Lopez Lake.

There is so much to do in this underrated California city. If you have yet to explore San Luis Obispo, what are you waiting for? Share this article with a friend who could use a little day (or weekend) trip inspiration and get ready for a lovely and unexpected adventure.
