This Retro Bowling Alley In Southern California Is The Perfect Place For A Dose Of Nostalgia

If you know where to look, there are wonderfully nostalgic spots throughout Southern California - from historic districts to old-fashioned soda fountains and a million things in between. For me, bowling alleys and arcades definitely take me back in time, which is why I love what's been done to this vintage bowling alley in Montrose, CA. And I have a sneaking suspicion that you're going to love it, too.

Montrose Bowl first opened its doors in 1940 and for decades thereafter boasted a cool 50s-style decor, reminiscent of a classic diner - even being sought out by location scouts and used in the filming of several period-specific movies.

The bowling alley has changed hands a few times and in the 2000s, it became mainly available only as venue for private parties and events.

Recently, this tiny eight-lane bowling alley received a major update and restoration, and once again offers open bowling to the public.

Though it has a modern sparkle and added comforts, the nostalgic vibe remains, keeping the history of this community gem alive and well. In fact, much has purposely been kept old-school, such as manual scoring - you get a pencil and paper to track your game.

A happy pink, green, black, and white color scheme has taken over with a retro-inspired checkered floor.

The vinyl booths and countertop in the cafe area are still there (just prettier!) with updated bar seating, and what was once a typical bowling alley snack bar is now an awesome cafe called Never Caged. The cafe is actually the biggest change in the place.

The menu is entirely vegan (I can already hear some sighs), but the comfort food offerings are incredibly familiar - burgers, burritos, fried “chicken” sandwiches and tenders, loaded fries, mac and cheese, and a few other goodies.

Customer reviews are always telling and the menu is overwhelmingly approved by many who say they were not excited about vegan food. Some even say it's worth coming just for the cafe!

You can stroll in on most days and knock down some pins, host a private party, or even rent out the entire place for an event. What a fantastic way to take a little trip down memory lane (see what I did there?)! Find out more about this sweet piece of history on the Montrose Bowl website.
