This Iconic Holiday Event in Alabama is the One Thing You Must Do This Season

Bellingrath Gardens and Home's Magic Christmas in Lights near Mobile dazzles over many generations as an iconic holiday event in Alabama.

Once named the most beautiful place in Alabama by Cosmopolitan magazine, Bellingrath Gardens & Home continues to dazzle like a celebrity magazine cover every Christmas season. Its annual Magic Christmas in Lights display has become an iconic holiday event in Alabama that is far more synonymous with the season than Mariah Carey.

I'd never knock Mariah and still here to say: All you really want for Christmas is a visit to Bellingrath in Theodore, Alabama, one of the state's communities along its beautiful Gulf Coast. Take a look.

The Magic Christmas in Lights at Bellingrath Gardens is pure magic, sparking wonder for visitors of all ages. While we have some incredible contendors in that category, like Christkindlmarkt in Cullman, this holiday destination has held a place in many hearts for a much longer time.

There's really no competition when it comes to Christmas cheer, anyway. Every addition makes it bigger and brighter, and no one can argue there's room for all we can imagine.

At Bellingrath, this spectacular show of delightful lights, color, festive activities, and creative holiday scenes has illuminated the grounds of one of the state's most treasured destinations for almost three decades.

Magic Christmas in Lights at Bellingrath Gardens & Home usually begins in late November, and this year's event runs through January 5th other than Christmas and New Year's Day. The sprawling 65 acres of outdoor spaces completely transform into a winter wonderland, adorned with thousands of lights and set pieces.

As meticulously as the gardens are tended throughout the year, these displays capture the artistry of Bellingrath's creative minds. Marvel at the charming storybook scenes, nature-inspired glow-ups, and classic Christmas touches of beautiful decor inside the historical home. The attention to detail is evident in every aspect.

While the lights usually start by 5 p.m. and gardens are open through 9 p.m., the last tickets for guided tours of the Bellingrath Home end at 7:30 p.m. You can also tour the home during the day before the lights from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with tours on the hour.

And the home tour is worth the visit, especially to connect with the family legacy that made this destination possible. Walter and Bessie Bellingrath opened their gardens to the public in 1932, after Mr. Bellingrath made a fortune as one of the first Coca-Cola bottlers in the Southeast. The Bellingraths chose to share their wealth with the community in many ways, including their gardens. It's been a gift to many generations.

While you know your eyes will be treated, you may be wondering about your appetite. You can buy hot cocoa and snacks for your stroll on Live Oak Plaza or have a more substantial meal at the onsite Magnolia Café from 4 to 8 p.m. If you prefer beer or wine, you'll find them at either location or opt for an Irish coffee midway through your walking tour.

Depending on your timing, you'll likely hear beautiful music from local choral groups and other performers. Maybe not Mariah Carey, but you can listen to her on your drive to a cozy night's rest at the elegant Battle House Renaissance Mobile Hotel & Spa, just 30 miles north at the top of the beautiful Mobile Bay.

It's a feeling that can only be experienced in person. I can't imagine a first-timer not making it a new tradition.

By the way, parking is free. Buying tickets in advance is recommended via the Bellingrath Gardens & Home website. Check out the Bellingrath Gardens & Home Facebook page for latest updates.
