I Spent an Afternoon at Cullman’s Christkindlmarkt and Now It’s My New Favorite Holiday Event in Alabama
With classic Southern charm and a celebration of German heritage, Cullman's Christkindlmarkt is next-level.
Cullman's Christkindlmarkt seems to have the entire Southeast abuzz -- and it's just getting started. After visiting this season (the market's fourth year in operation), I completely understand why. Infused with classic small-town charm and nods at every turn to the town's German roots, "next-level" is the best way to describe this holiday market in Alabama.

Walking into this Christmas market feels cinematic -- a 100-foot Ferris wheel and Weinachtspyramide makes for a very dramatic first impression.

On one end, there's a large ice skating rink. On the other, there's a towering, 40-foot Christmas tree and the largest Weihnachtspyramide in North America. (Curious about what a Weihnachtspyramide is? That's a great question! It's a traditional German Christmas pyramid that features holiday scenes rotating carousel style on several tiers.)

Of course, there is a whimsical carousel you can ride, too. Organizers restored the beautiful vintage ride that dates to 1941, when it first operated at Boston Commons. It's near the igloo village, or "Eislounge" area near the ice skating arena.

Tucked in among the attractions are Der Schlupwinkel, which are heated nooks you can rent and enjoy drinks, snacks and people-watching along the walkways.
Food & Shopping at Cullman's Christkindlmarkt
Framing the grounds are neat rows of village huts full of vendors offering crafts and other gifts; food and sweet treats; hot cocoa, cider, coffee, and adult beverages; and food ranging from chimney cakes and springerle cookies to juicy brats and warm, soft pretzels.

I visited the food vendors next to Winterbahn, where I picked up a freshly cooked, delicious chicken schnitzel with spiral-cut potatoes at the Schnitzel Haus. I then found a seat in the large warming house to enjoy the meal while listening to carolers. Next door in the large, enclosed Kinderplatz, I saw children made toys with Santa and cookies with Mrs. Claus. Buddy the Elf made his rounds between the structures.
As I savored the schnitzel, an event volunteer stopped by my table.
"How is everything?" he asked.
"SO good," I replied.

It was easy to give a glowing review. Thousands upon thousands of lights trimming every structure, tree and holiday display illuminated the whole experience. The most memorable aspect of Christkindlmarkt in Cullman? Seeing so many happy faces of people from all walks of life: families, groups of teens, couples snapping pictures at the festive entryways, kids playing, and friendly vendors selling their wares.
Visiting Cullman's Christkindlmarkt
If you go, here are some important details: Cullman's Christkindlmarkt dates are Nov. 21-Dec. 23, 2024, Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m.
Tip: The event has become very popular, so for best parking options and slightly smaller crowds, go on a weeknight like I did.

While admission is free, bring money for food, drinks, treats, shopping and rides. For a point of reference, my schnitzel and spiral fries cost $16.77 including tax. The portion was generous enough to share, so I'd recommend you bring a friend and try a few different things.
Ferris wheel rides are $9 for people taller than 32 inches and free for those under that mark. Six people fit in each gondola. Winterbahn rides are $2 for one ride and $5 for three, and you must be at least age 4 and 39 inches tall to ride. Ice skating costs $12 Thursday-Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and increases to $15 after 3 p.m. Friday through all of Saturday and Sunday. The cost is $4 less any time if you bring your own skates.
