These 8 Tiny Local Delis Serve The Best Subs In Delaware
Whether you call it a sub or a hoagie depends on where you grew up in Delaware. If you’re from northern New Castle county, you probably call it a hoagie. If you’re from anywhere else, it’s a sub. It’s pretty straightforward, but it still causes some tension between people who feel strongly about their sandwich naming tradition. I’m not going to reveal my sandwich-name preferences, but I will tell you where you can find the best sub shops in Delaware, order an Italian
whatever, and enjoy an amazing sandwich.
1. Gaudiello's, Wilmington
Gaudiellos in Wilmington reminds me of the italian hoagie shops that you find on every corner in South Philly! This little mom and pop joint in Trolley Square makes unbelievable hoagies with fresh, cut-to-order meat and fresh toppings. Give them a try next time you're upstate.

2. Malins, Newark
Malin's is my go-to stop when I'm traveling through Newark. It's right off the highway and they make the most delicious subs in Delaware! Everyone is super friendly, and they even have homemade dog treats and baked goods for people, too! I don't think I've ever driven past Malin's without stopping by.

3. Ioannoni's, New Castle
The Roast Pork Supremo at
Ioannoni’s in New Castle is one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten! Their chicken cutlets are always seasoned perfectly, and everything they make here is fresh and delicious. They've been doing it for a decade and I hope they'll be around for the rest of my life.
624 E Basin Rd
New Castle, Delaware
4. Tatanka Subs & Grubs, Dover
Tatanka is a tiny shop in a Dover strip mall, but don't let that fool you! Their subs are gigantic and delicious! The Luscious Italian, pictured above, is my favorite. I'm a sucker for sharp provolone and capicola.
155 N. DuPont Hwy, Dover, Delaware
5. Surf's Up, Bethany Beach
Surf's Up in Bethany Beach is a sandwich landmark on the coast! They make one of the best cheesesteaks that you can find downstate, and their specialty subs are always delicious, too. Stop in next time you've got the family in Bethany Beach for a lunch everybody will enjoy.

Bethany Beach, DE 19930
6. Surf's Edge, Fenwick Island
Surf's Edge is the most famous sub spot in Fenwick Island, and for good reason. Their "Edge" sandwich is delicious with chicken or steak, and they'll deliver to the beach in Fenwick Island OR in Ocean City. How great is that?
100 Coastal Hwy
Fenwick Island, Delaware
7. Casapulla's, Rehoboth Beach
Casapulla's is located near the Rehoboth Beach outlets and it's the perfect place to stop after a full morning of shopping. Their subs are among the best subs in Delaware, and my mouth is watering just thinking of their classic italian. Be sure to get lots of the sweet and hot peppers on your sub, because Casapullo's has perfected them.

Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971
8. Glasgow Deli, Dover
Glasgow Deli has been
the place to grab a great sub in Dover for years, and they really haven't ever disappointed me! I love their chicken cheesesteaks and of course, their famous italian hoagie. If you are from Philly, you will appreciate that they stock tastykakes, too. 3920 N Dupont Hwy, Dover, DE 19901
