Barratt’s Chapel Was Built In Delaware In 1780 And It’s One Of The Oldest Churches In The Country

Not many people realize that the oldest Methodist chapel in the country is still standing in small town Delaware. Head to Frederica to find a historically significant church on a quiet country road and visit Barratt’s Chapel.

The chapel was built in 1780 on land donated by Philip Barratt, who wanted to promote the ideals of Methodism in Delaware.

It wasn't until 1784, though, that the chapel established itself as the Birthplace and Cradle of American Methodism.

After the tumultuous American Revolution, only two Methodist preachers remained in the colonies. One retreated to a mountain home in upstate New York, but Francis Asbury became the leader of Methodism in America. After the war, the leader of Methodism in England sent a minister to meet with Asbury, and upon their meeting was the first time baptism and Communion were held by Methodist clergy.
Today, this historic church remains a chapel and a museum, and it is open for all to enjoy. Of course, it holds a special place in the hearts of Methodists. While the chapel has undergone renovations to keep it safe and up-to-date, nearly all of the interior dates back to at least the 1800s.
