This is Hanny’s, a restaurant located in downtown Phoenix near the intersection of 1st Street and Adams Street.

There are several things that make this restaurant stand out from many of the other eateries downtown, but one of the most unique aspects of Hanny’s? It was once a department store!

Hanny’s was built as a three-story department store in 1947 and it brought modern architecture into the Southwestern city with its international style.

The store focused on men’s fashion and clothing until it closed in 1986.

In 2008, the building reopened as Hanny’s, a restaurant and bar that still maintains the feel of an upscale department store.

For example, where the counter and registers once sat, you can find the restaurant’s bar busy with patrons and bartenders.

If you take the time to wander around the building, you'll find the old elevator shaft that is now empty and covered with a thick layer of glass.

And you'll even encounter this truly strange sight hiding in the basement. What do you think is the story behind it?

The food here is delicious, matching its upscale surroundings.
