If you’re looking for somewhere amazing to hike this year, the Reed Lakes Trail in Alaska is an amazing hike.
This hike is legendary and has some incredible features you simply won’t find anywhere else. You’ll come across natural features like an emerald lake, sheets of waterfalls, and 6,000-foot mountain peaks.
This stunning, 8.7 mile, out-and-back trail is one that will take your breath away.
As you hike in the Talkeetnas, you’ll be walking in the valleys between majestic mountain peaks. You’ll be navigating a good amount of elevation gain; expect to climb over 2,247 feet throughout the trail.
For the first two miles, the trail is fairly straightforward.
After that, you’ll enter a boulder field as you head deeper into the mountains. Be sure to wear good, sturdy hiking shoes. Once you exit the boulder field, the hiking gets easier, and you’ll come across waterfalls, stunning alpine lakes, and more.
All of the lakes that dot the trail are all stunning, but the large emerald green one will take your breath away.
Don’t forget your camera, because this is one sight you'll want to remember. This is the perfect spot to pack a lunch and spend some time enjoying the views.
If you want to see the famous airplane wreckage, continue on and head over Bomber Glacier.
You’ll want to move down the glacier a bit before you run into the debris. The plane wreckage is over 60 years old, and took the lives of six men instantly. Please be respectful and leave the wreckage as you found it.
With all the sights to see on Reed Lakes Trail, this hike is one that you’ll want to add to your list.
However, be prepared for weather changes; even September can see unexpected snowstorms. Dress or pack in layers, and come prepared for Alaska’s rugged backcountry.
