1. January - Town of Mentone
The town of Mentone, which is nestled atop Lookout Mountain, makes for the perfect day trip this time of year. Because it's the highest elevated town in Alabama, it offers some pretty incredible views. Mentone also offers unique shops, award-winning restaurants, and beautiful parks that are perfect for taking a winter stroll.
2. February - Ave Maria Grotto (Cullman)
Ave Maria Grotto is an incredible, four-acre garden park that features 125 miniature reproductions of historic buildings and religious shrines. It's one of Alabama's most beautiful outdoor attractions and is a must visit for the entire family.
3. March - Cheaha State Park (Delta)
The month of March is a great time to visit Cheaha State Park. Established in 1933, it's Alabama's oldest state park. It's also perched atop Cheaha Mountain, which means you'll experience the most breathtaking views.
4. April - Birmingham Botanical Gardens (Birmingham)
When April arrives, it's a great time to stroll the grounds of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Covering more than 60 acres, this beautiful garden is Alabama's largest living museum. It's also free to visit.
5. May - Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge (West Blocton)
The Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge is one of Alabama's most unique outdoor attractions. It's home to the world's largest stand of Cahaba lilies, which bloom from early May to the end of June. You absolutely must see these Cahaba lilies in person to appreciate how beautiful they truly are.
6. June - Dismals Canyon (Phil Campbell)
Dismals Canyon is one of Alabama's true hidden gems. While strolling through the canyon, you'll encounter several moss-covered boulders, a flowing stream, and breathtaking waterfalls. This beautiful landmark, which covers approximately 85 acres, is a must visit for all ages.
7. July - Gulf State Park (Gulf Shores)
In July, Gulf State Park is the perfect place to be. It offers beautiful white-sand beaches and several recreational activities, including swimming, hiking, biking, fishing, and more. Without a doubt, it's a wonderful spot for a summer day trip.
8. August - Red Mountain Park (Birmingham)
For a little adventure in August, you'll want to visit Red Mountain Park. This 1,500-acre park offers everything from ziplining, rock climbing, biking, hiking, and more. It makes for a fun day trip for the entire family.
9. September - Ozan Vineyard & Winery (Calera)
Who doesn't love a refreshing glass of wine? For September, you'll want to visit Ozan Vineyard & Winery. Its award-winning wine is extra special because it's locally produced. Ozan Vineyard & Winery also offers visitors wine tastings, cellar tours, and train excursions.
10. October - DeSoto Caverns (Childersburg)
If you've never explored DeSoto Caverns, it's a definite must once October arrives. Best known as "Alabama's Big Cave," DeSoto Caverns is a series of caves located at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains. It's also America's first recorded cave, which makes it highly unique. In addition to the caverns, this unique attraction also offers a trail maze, a train, mini golf, pedal go-karts, and so much more.
11. November - Little River Canyon National Preserve (Fort Payne)
Because of its colorful foliage, November is a great time to visit Little River Canyon National Preserve. Located atop Lookout Mountain, this incredible preserve offers everything from gorgeous waterfalls to spectacular views. Some pretty amazing trails are also located within the preserve.
12. December - Bellingrath Gardens and Home (Theodore)
Bellingrath Gardens and Home is a great place to visit all year long, but it's extra special during the month of December. Its annual "Magic Christmas in Lights" is one of America's best public light displays. It features more than 3 million lights and 1,100 set pieces. This year will be its 25th anniversary. You don't want to miss it!
