Hike To The Well-Preserved Abandoned Martinez Mine In Arizona

Given Arizona’s rich mining history, it only makes sense that remnants of the industry would be scattered throughout our desert landscape. While that may be true, most of the abandoned structures have long since succumbed to the harsh elements. One mine, however, is incredibly well-preserved and still contains amazing evidence of the operations that once took place there. Check it out:

The historic town of Florence was a popular mining area back when the industry was in its heyday. While largely just memories so many years later, one structure is still standing as tall and proud as ever.

Hiding in a towering, remote canyon is Martinez Mine, one of the most well-preserved mines in Arizona. It was owned by a local family for over 40 years before recently being purchased by the Bureau of Land Management.

At just 1.9 miles, the trail to reach Martinez Mine is short and easy. It's accessible year-round and features beautiful wildflowers during springtime.

Upon reaching the mine, you'll notice a variety of machinery and other debris scattered among decaying boards, dirt, and rubble. Although heavily rusted, its integrity still remains nearly unchanged after all this time.

Generators, conveyor belts, several ore samples, and entrance shafts are just a few examples of the equipment you'll see. Picture miners putting in long hours here, many of which unfortunately succumbed to the elements or suffered tragic accidents.

The road to reach the trailhead to Martinez Mine is rocky and quite steep in areas. An off-road vehicle is highly recommended, but at the very least, you’ll need a high-clearance car with four-wheel drive. Click here for directions.
