Arizona is home to thousands of hiking trails, but none are quite this unique. With not one but several naturally-formed tunnels along its path, Hidden Valley Trail in South Mountain Park is an adventure for the whole family. The best part? It’s hiding right in the backyard of our state’s biggest city!
This 3.4-mile loop is something of a hidden gem, offering something different from the monotonous South Mountain desert landscape. It's about a 2-hour hike and is considered moderately difficult.
All of the passageways are natural rock formations, a fact you'll find hard to believe after seeing them in person. Like pieces of a puzzle, the slabs fit together perfectly with zero assistance from mankind.
Strikingly similar to underground caverns or perhaps even the undulating surface of Mars, geological wonders wait around every corner. You'll definitely want to bring your camera to capture the breathtaking scenery.
With several offshoot paths to set off on, rest-assured you'll never get bored. Just like a choose your own adventure novel, only fate knows where you'll end up.
Accessible year-round, Hidden Valley Trail is typically crowded. We suggest an early morning hike to beat the crowds (and take advantage of an awe-inspiring Arizona sunrise!)
