CALLING ALL BURGER ENTHUSIASTS! Now, not to brag or anything (okay, I’m totally bragging), but we just know how burgers are done in Texas. In fact, we’re the proud home of the very first hamburger! You won’t find a meatier, juicier, cheesier, more mouthwatering burger anywhere else but the Lone Star State – specifically at the following places. So get ready to take your taste buds on a journey, folks (and possibly your car after you’re done reading this article) – here are 17 burger joints in Texas that will blow your mind and leave you satisfied to the brim.
17. Burger Fresh (Conroe)
Maybe not the most clean-cut picture, but that doesn't matter when we're talkin' burgers. Burger Fresh has a burger dedicated to Texas Monthly for ranking them in the top 50 best burgers in the state. It's a 1/2 lb Angus Beef patty served on their famous Jalapeno Sourdough bun with grilled onions, bell peppers, pepper jack cheese, bacon, and avocado. You can build your own burger piled high with whatever toppings fit your fancy and add a side of fries (regular or sweet potato), tots or onion rings.
16. Jakes Uptown (Dallas)
I have no words for this beautiful creation...except that you can't forget to try their cheddar fries on the side (and add sour cream, chives and bacon!). Because cheese. The end. Also, there are 22 burgers to choose from here, so whether you're in the mood for something fancy like hot dogs, chili and hickory sauce on your burger or a good ol' original, Jake's has you covered.
15. Hubcap Grill (Houston)
Come try the best burger joint in Houston, according to the Chronicle! Stay traditional or go all out with one of their 19 specialty burgers like the Double Decker pictured here. And you absolutely cannot leave without getting some of their epic fries on the side.
14. Kincaid's Hamburgers (Southlake)
They were voted in the top 10 burgers in America by localeats.com, and I can see why. I need this in my face hole right about now.
13. Roadhouse (Bastrop)
Everything here looks so good, it was tough to decide what to feature. I think this close-up of their Jalepeno Cream Cheese burger does the trick, don't you? The Green Chili Cheeseburger also sounded delicious. Maybe with a side of queso fries. Mmmmm.
12. The Shack Burger Resort (Cypress)
A burger RESORT? This place is ridiculous, guys. Want a no frills, meat and cheese hamburger? They've got it. Want cheetos, a fried egg, caramelized bananas, or even BACON MAC & CHEESE on your burger? Oh, they've got it. Pictured above is the aptly named "5 Napkins." That yolk's gotta drip somewhere.
11. Twisted Root Burger Co. (Dallas)
Twisted Root is an alternative-type burger joint with some interesting flavor combos. You can get a standard burger, but that definitely isn't what they're known for. Pictured here is The Ranch Hand: Peppercorn ranch dressing, bacon, lettuce & tomato on a sesame seed bun. Another cool thing that sets them apart is all the different meats they offer! From buffalo to camel to kangaroo, they practically have the entire animal kingdom ready to be dished up.
10. Lankford Grocery & Market (Houston)
Why am I just hearing about this place in my own city?! Mac & Cheese, a fried egg, AND bacon on a burger. Can you say yum?
9. Tookie's (Seabrook)
Ah, Tookie's. Known and loved by all its patrons. Luckily they were able to rebuild after severe damage by Hurricane Ike, and they're back and yummier than ever! Burgers just aren't complete without a generous helping of cheese, in my opinion.
8. Maple and Motor (Dallas)
Simple yet bold. That's how we do it here in Texas.
7. Rosco's Burger Inn (El Paso)
You didn't think I forgot about the Old West, did you? Rosco's is a no-frills, straightforward burger joint - but that doesn't mean quality is compromised at all. Sink your teeth into one of these babies and you'll see what I mean.
6. Classics Burgers and Moore (Kerrville)
The pun was enough to draw me in, personally. This might be an unexpected place to find an award-winning burger, but you won't be disappointed. Their bacon cheeseburger has 5 slices of crispy bacon on it!!
5. Mel's Country Cafe (Tomball)
Inside this seemingly innocent diner lies some delicious eats and one mammoth challenge. Can you defeat the Mega Mel? 1.5 lbs of beef, 1 lb of bacon, 1/4 lb of cheese, and all the fixins.
5. MG's Restaurant (Sherman)
Every burger here is named after a car! How cool is that? This is "The Cadillac" AKA cheese, bacon, mustard and all the veggies.
3. Coyote Bluff Cafe (Amarillo)
This place was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, so you know it's gotta be good. Their specials are the Hell Burger with a special sauce that'll make smoke come out of your ears and the Green Chili Burger, but this is just an original. Would you look at that cheese??
2. Willie's Place (Wichita Falls)
Does this place look like it's capable of masterpieces like these? I didn't think so either. But the Frito Chili and Mushroom Swiss Burgers are begging to differ. They also have a "Psycho Burger" that has jalepenos, habeneros, ghost chilis, and ghost chili sauce. Nobody could pay me enough money to eat that.
1. Keller's Drive-In (Dallas)
Rounding out the list is none other than Keller's. Nothing particularly fancy, but the quality can't be beat. Their signature poppy seed bun really takes it to the next level.
Mmmm. Have you been to any of these burger joints? Do you have any other favorites that should’ve made the list? Share your thoughts in the comments!
