Tubing isn’t the only option for a fun float down the Apple River. At River’s Edge, a campground and resort, you can also go tanking. The new mode of transportation is as quirky and as fun as it sounds, and you’ll want to give it a shot this summer.
Located in New Richmond, River’s Edge has been a top camping and tubing destination since the early 1960s.
True to its name, it’s located on the Apple River. The riverside locale makes River’s Edge a prime spot for some on-the-water fun.
In addition to a couple of water slides, River’s Edge offers tube and tank rentals.
Tubing down the Apple River has been a favorite summer activity for decades – and tanking is likely to become just as popular.
So, what exactly is tanking? Well, instead of floating down the river in a tube, you’ll float down the river in a 500-gallon stock tank – hence the name.
Great for groups, each tank has a four-person minimum and six-person maximum. And since the tanks are much more stable than canoes and kayaks, tipping over is far less likely.
Unlike tubing, tanking doesn’t require you to get in the water. Because tank passengers aren't submerged in the river, the tanking season is longer than the tubing season.
Tubing season runs from Memorial Day weekend – Labor Day weekend. The 2021 tanking season runs from April 16th – October 3rd.
Tanking also differs from tubing when it comes to navigating. Instead of simply floating along, as you would in a tube, tanking may require a bit of effort at times, which is why each tank rental includes two paddles.

There are a few things you should know before planning a tanking adventure.
- First, you don’t have to be an overnight guest of River’s Edge to go tanking (or tubing).
- Second, tanks have to be reserved in advance.
- And finally, there must be at least one legal adult in each tank.
Ready to reserve your tank? For more information, call River’s Edge at (715) 247-3305. You can also visit the River’s Edge website or Facebook page.
