If you’re looking for a state park that’s got it all, look no further than High Cliff State Park. The nearly 1,200-acre park is steeped in both beauty and history. And with miles upon miles of trails, you can easily explore all of the park’s perks, which include huge rock formations, waterfront views, vibrant flora and foliage, and historic ruins…to name a few. Take a look:
Tucked away in the tiny village of Sherwood, High Cliff State Park is often overlooked, but that’s a huge mistake.
A true gem, the park is brimming with beauty, which can partly be attributed to the fact that it’s the only state recreational site on Lake Winnebago.
Each season brings new views – and new opportunities for fun – to the park.
Horseback riding, picnicking, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, boating, biking, hiking, and fishing are just a few activities parkgoers can enjoy.
More than 26 miles of trails, which include bike and horse trails, make it easy to navigate the park and take in all it has to offer.
Among the most popular trails is the Lime Kiln Trail.
Offering a peek at some of the park’s best sights, the winding trail passes by the Lake Winnebago shoreline and Niagara Escarpment.
The only formation of its kind in the world, the Niagara Escarpment is considered one of Wisconsin’s 7 wonders – and you’ll be afforded up-close views during your trek.
As you continue along the trail, you’ll eventually come to the ruins of a limestone kiln, which operated for nearly a century, beginning in the 1850s.
Not far from the ruins sits a general store from the 1880s. The general store has since been transformed into a museum and nature center.
Remember, the Lime Kiln Trail is just one of the park's many treks. Some other popular paths include The Butterfly Pond Trail, Forest Management Trail, and Indian Mound Trail.
With incredible vistas, loads of history, and seemingly endless recreational opportunities, there really is something for everyone at High Cliff State Park.
