11 Food Faux-Pas No Milwaukeean Should Ever Commit
Milwaukee’s dining culture is booming, but we have a few interesting habits when it comes to food. We take our traditions seriously, and most of them revolve around food! Don’t be the odd one out and make any of these food mistakes. Some things you simply just don’t do, or you may be kicked out of Milwaukee. Here are 11 of the worst food faux-pas.
1. Choosing ice cream over frozen custard.
Milwaukee is practically the frozen custard capital of the world. This sweet treat is available by the carton and is just so much better than ice cream.
2. Grilling a hot dog instead of a brat.
Brats > hot dogs forever. Don't be the odd one out at the cookout.
3. Refusing to eat fish on Fridays.
Eating any other dinner on Friday night is a sin in Milwaukee. Not only is this the perfectly fried up meal, but Friday night fish fries are a community-wide tradition, and you're not allowed to sit out.
4. Not seeing if your cheese squeaks.
A cheese curd is not a real cheese curd unless it squeaks.
5. Or even worse, eating cheese from somewhere else.
You're in Wisconsin but you're eating cheese from elsewhere? You must be crazy. This is the dairy state!
6. Considering anywhere but Mader’s for German food.
Not only is Mader's
Milwaukee's oldest restaurant,
it also keeps our heritage alive by serving up the best German fare in town. You shouldn't think twice about dining here else if you're looking for a stein of beer and a sausage!
7. Ordering a Bud Light, (or really anything that isn’t brewed in Wisconsin.)
Honestly, just stick with PBR. You'll be happier. We promise.
8. Having a Bloody Mary without a chaser.
...or an entire meal on top of your drink! Here in Milwaukee, Bloody Marys are so much more than a drink, but you must at least have a beer chaser.
9. Not having a cream puff at State Fair.
Sure, you can find cream puffs at your local bakery, but there's something unique about a State Fair cream puff that you just can't pass up.
10. Having a plain old butterless hamburger.
Hamburgers are great, but Milwaukeeans only eat them doused in butter. Butterburgers are like hamburgers on steroids, and we can't get enough.
11. Choosing a chain, ever.
Milwaukee is full of amazing restaurants. The thought of choosing a chain in a city so rich with independent restaurants is mind-blowing.
Eek! These food mistakes are the worst. What would you add? Let us know in the comments!
