Yep, that’s right; this family-run sweet shop is tucked away in the basement of a residence, where it’s been since opening in 1940, making it one of the best hidden gems in Wisconsin. Said to whip up the "world’s best chocolate," it’s the perfect place to stock up on some sweets for the journey ahead. (Remember, though, Hughes Home Maid Chocolate Shop is open seasonally, September – May.)

Also among the best hidden gems in Wisconsin, it’s a little-known spot that offers visitors the chance to stay aboard a 1968 SOO-Line caboose. And unlike most other renovated cabooses, it’s retained many of its original features, allowing visitors to see what a real working caboose once looked like.

There are so many wonderful hidden gems in Wisconsin, and Bookworm Gardens is one of them. Located in Sheboygan, the garden, which is inspired by popular children’s books, perfectly merges literature and the natural world. In addition to lots of lovely sights, Bookworm Gardens hosts a variety of special events as well as classes and tours for adults and children. A seasonal favorite, Bookworm Gardens is open May through October.

Just like there are tons of hidden places in Wisconsin, there are plenty of well known spots in the state. As far as restaurants go, Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant and Butik is one of the most highly rated restaurants in all of Wisconsin. Serving up a dining experience like no other, the eatery is most known for its resident goats, which like to hang out on the sod roof of the restaurant. It’s an endearing sight that won’t soon be forgotten. Wildlife on the roof isn’t the only thing that sets Al’s apart, though. It’s also known for its authentic Swedish fare, which includes all the classics – from Swedish meatballs to pancakes with lingonberries. An on-site boutique, which is stocked with genuine items from Scandinavia, is also part of the restaurant’s appeal.
