You don’t have to spend all day inside of a dimly-lit museum to dive into West Virginia’s incredible history. Make your way out to the charming little city of Philippi to go for a stroll over our state’s oldest covered bridge. Spend an afternoon enjoying one of the Mountain State’s most wonderful historic structures out in Barbour County. It’s a delightful piece of the past that you’ll love to see still standing.
Stretching across the Tygart Valley River, the Philippi Covered Bridge holds the dual title of being the longest
and oldest covered bridge in West Virginia!
The Philippi Covered Bridge is an interesting piece of West Virginia's past. It was originally built in 1852 out of just wood and iron bolts.
Around the bridge, you'll find historical markers that tell you more about the structure's past - like the fact that it was used during the Civil War by the North and South armies.
Over the course of history, the bridge underwent renovations as well as repairs after suffering from drastic fires and other issues. It's now been strengthened enough to allow cars to drive over it.
While you may not be able to walk right down the center of the Philippi Covered Bridge, you'll find walkways on the side where you can soak in the views of the Tygart Valley River.
At a total of 285 1/2 feet long and 26 feet wide, this bridge is certainly one remarkable and scenic structure.
Here's another fun fact you'll want to keep in your back pocket. This covered bridge also happens to be the only covered bridge serving the US Federal Highway System, as it’s part of U.S. Route 50.
If you didn't realize just how unique the Philippi Covered Bridge was, then start planning your trip to Barbour County now to see why this place makes for the perfect day trip.
