7 Places To Get The BEST Hot Dogs In West Virginia
West Virginia is renowned for its hot dog culture, with numerous chains and independent shops offering unique regional variations.
West Virginia takes hot dogs very seriously. There are several great chains like T&L, Hometown Hot Dogs, and the Custard Stand. There are hundreds more little independent hot dog shops. It seems like every town in West Virginia has at least one hot dog joint.
What defines a West Virginia hot dog depends on where you live. In the north, it's topped with mustard, onion, and "sauce" (chili without beans). In the south, you also get a sweet and creamy "slaw" (coleslaw). West Virginians will argue their whole lives about which is better.
Although the chains are also delicious, let's take a look at a few of the best independent hot dog spots.
1. King Tut Drive-In, Beckley
This old-fashioned drive-in has been serving up West Virginia dogs since the early 1940s. Hot dogs come with the standard mustard, onion, chili & slaw, and you can also get cheese.
2. Hillbilly Hot Dogs, Lesage
This world-famous hot dog spot plays on West Virginia stereotypes and offers a wide variety of creative hot dogs. The Homewrecker shown here features an incredible 15-inch dog that weighs 3 pounds with all the fixings.
3. Yann's, Fairmont
Everyone who tries a Yann dog feels passionate about it, whether it's love or hate. This little shop is known for its incredibly spicy sauce and surly owner.
4. Woody's, Fairmont
If you don't like Yann's, you're probably a fan of Woody's, with its milder, meatier sauce and friendlier service.
5. Morrison's Drive Inn, Logan
Morrison's has been serving its famous hot dogs since 1947. They are served wrapped in plastic so the flavors meld together.
6. Stewart's Original Hot Dogs, Huntington and Kenova
Stewart's has been serving up hot dogs since 1932. Try them with a classic root beer float.
7. Hinton Dairy Queen
Even though we were trying to avoid chains, there's one chain that just needed to be mentioned: the Hinton Dairy Queen. Although the chain is national, this location knows what a good West Virginia dog should be. While you eat you can enjoy great views of the New River.
